The Book

The Book is one of a few Brown County log cabins that have remained on its original site of 50 acres for over 120 years. Reportedly used as a writing retreat by Hoosier author Booth Tarkington, The Book retains all its original charm, but has been updated for today's comfort.

An old Brown County native tells us that "we're building now in places that were never meant to be built on." As you make your way up the long, narrow, steep driveway you will see signs of the old structure that was built around 1880. The steep terrain made it hard for the builders to build, but the views and the seclusion made it worth their while. We recommend a 4-wheel drive vehicle, especially in inclement weather.

A large screened porch welcomes guests and spans the length of the cabin. Sit outside and eat while enjoying the views of the wooded hillside . Step from the porch into the original log living room featuring a wood-burning fireplace and stone hearth. The antique table, made in Brown County, seats four. A futon allows two additional guests to sleep in comfort.

Step ladder-like stairs originally provided access to the roomy loft bedroom with a queen bed, but were replaced with easy-to-climb stairs to make access easier. The kitchen and bathroom add to the rustic charm The Book is known for.

Need additional space? The Kids Place is down the gravel road and within walking distance on the road or through the woods.

Take a quick drive to Bean Blossom, a small town that features bluegrass festivals, antique shops and one of the two covered bridges found in Brown County. The Village of Nashville is 5.5 miles and Brown County State Park is 7.5 miles.
